The SiteMarkeroni was started on August 13th, 2003.It provides resources so that you can find historical markers and historic landmarks, then a place where you can log your visits. Right now it covers the USA, Canada, Australia and the British Isles. One day, we hope to go world-wide.
The StoryOnce upon a time there was a woman called Linda Gentile who by a somewhat twisty route was introduced to a historic landmark treasure hunt done on motorcycles.Eagerly, she signed up for the treasure hunt and got going, expecting that she could finish the challenge on a month-long solo motorcycle tour she had been planning for six months. Alas, it was not to be. Her motorcycle, Arnie, broke his first gear two days before the journey was to begin, effectively cancelling it. After an appropriate period of mourning, out came the maps and the orange marker pen, the trusty California landmarks guide, and before long the map of California was covered top to toe with little orange blobs denoting towns with landmarks in them. Two ideas were born from the general feeling of "what next?". The first was the one where Linda (a.k.a. TCM, or The Chief Markeroon) decided to visit every single historic landmark in California and to log/journal it someplace online. Hot on its heels followed the demand, "Why not share it?" And that's how this site started. Really.
The NameThe name sort of popped up out of the blue one day. It was very persistent. We fed it to some friends and some strangers and they all thought that it, like macaroni, was good and nutritious. Since Linda is a big fan of macaroni, the name was fated to stick. And so it goes.
The PeopleLinda, known on this site as TCM or The Chief Markeroon, is a 38-year-old Piscean, slightly geeky, motorcycle-riding author and Web mistress. She enjoys gardening, cat-snuggling and good food. She is an avid reader and Book Crosser, is historical-marker mad, and has an interest in astrology. Born in Northern England, she has lived in California since August 1997. Writing as Linda Raven Moore, she published her first travel book, "A Little Twist of Texas", in 2006. It's about her first long, solo motorcycle trip...landmark-hunting merrily along the way. Most days, she has a sense of humour and has described herself as being terminally optimistic. She lives in Lodi with her husband, three cats, and motorcycles, Beastie and Max II. Don, Linda's husband, will probably never be seen posting here, but helps in the background with lots and lots of important technical stuff. He is a Linux guru, petter of cats, and also a motorcyclist. Gracie (12) JR (12) and Silver (10) are the household cats. They will be seen walking over keyboards from time to time, causing typographical errors. Those have nothing to do with humans at all. Honest. (You can report cat sightings, oops, typographical errors, using the help form.)
The BusinessLinda's business is called Annwn Web Creations LLC, and it looks after this site as well as an entire stable of other ones called the Wild Wyrd World. We create and run online communities and sites, as well as related products.
