Thirteen Useful Snarfari Preparations

I tend to gather my snarfs in two different types of trips; snarfs logged during the first are ones that I come upon without having hunted them down. They may be signs on well-traveled highways, or they may be buildings that I find while doing errands or visiting people. The other sort of trip I plan out, complete with maps and directions, food and drink, etc. The following preparations and packing are steps I take in order to maximize the number of snarfs I can take in a trip in the least amount of time and driving (prices have been going down lately, but they still make me gulp).

  1. Make a general plan–what area sounds good for a trip? How long do I want to spend in (and out of) the car? (This includes heat/weather and for me, child tolerance factors.) Will this be a driving or walking snarfari?

  2. With destination chosen, create a list (Markeroni’s resource pages are excellent). Include any addresses or driving directions included in the Landmarks Visited Catalog.

  3. Generate and print a map of the area using your favorite online tool (Google, MapQuest, Yahoo, etc.). I like to cut mine down and secure it to the inside of my log book.

  4. Pack the camera and enough film for 2-3 shots for each landmark/marker. I try to get one overall picture and one closeup of any marker that’s too much to transcribe into the logbook. If I had a digital camera, I’d make sure I had a fully charged battery, a backup, and an empty CF card.

  5. Pack the logbook and marker list/s. Right now, I’m using index cards, which I can binder-clip to the logbook to keep everything together. I also make sure I have a few operational pens. In the event of especially long descriptions, it might be worth it to also include some sticky notes so you can dedicate one page per landmark.

  6. If I’m doing the Challenge, remember my mascot. Sometimes, I’ll pack my Poppets if I think I’ll be anywhere picturesque.

  7. Make certain I’ll be able to cover the trip gas-wise. If not, I research gas prices along my route to find the cheapest offerings.

  8. Pack water and light meal/snack, or bring cash. It doesn’t do to risk dehydration or low blood sugar levels, and if you’re in a downtown historic district, an ethnic meal relevant to the area can add a special something to your trip.

  9. Check online to see if construction will interfere with your driving route or your walking tour. Local Chambers of Commerce may also have this information.

  10. Check area websites to see what else may be going on during your snarfari. Some people like to combine this with market days, festivals, or other special events.

  11. If your snarfari is several days out, take the time to find links and book titles beforehand, so you have them ready for catalog entry upon return.

  12. Pack a few extra binder clips (or bulk fastener of choice) to secure any brochures you may happen upon.

  13. In general, wear good walking shoes and comfortable clothing, but also check the weather forecast, then supplement accordingly.
