What information about historical markers and landmarks to expect for England, British Isles

England has proven a little difficult to sort out. We are most of the way through trying to standardise our data, though at this time we still have landmarks with different codes grouped together in the ENG_PS list. This will get fixed over time.

The Blue Plaques are the closest to a historical marker system that there is, and English Heritage properties are the nearest to a "national" system of landmark buildings. Added to these are properties managed by the National Trust, which is a charity. (English Heritage is government.) We have now entered all the E.H. properties and blue plaques, and all the National Trust historical properties, in our database. If we missed one, please request it individually.

Added to this, if you can find a building that is listed in the Pastscape database, please request it for the ENG_PS list. We simply don't have the resources to add these properties wholesale. You're very likely to find random plaques or stray blue plaques that don't belong in the English Heritage system. Please request those individually, as well. Be sure to let us know if these are blue plaques.

When it comes to random plaques, we divide them up this way:

  • If the plaque is about the building, it goes in an Ancient Monuments and Listed Buildings grouping
  • If the plaque is about a person or event, it usually goes in a wildcards grouping
  • If a building has two plaques, one for a person and one for the building, one plaque will go in each grouping and you were lucky - two for the price of one.
