What information about historical markers and landmarks to expect for Georgia, USA

Georgia has over 2600 historical markers and a complicated history. The system has changed hands and changed styles multiple times over the many years of its existence. A private resource, the Carl Vinson Institute of Government, lists the known historical markers.

We consider the current markers, the Historical Society ones, to be the "official" state system with code GA. The older markers are either divided up by the organization that erected them, or go in as wildcards or monuments.

The old-style Georgia historical markers are all input.

We know that the newer GA markers come with numbers. The photographs on the site we've used are invariably too small to read those numbers. We have taken our best guess and are using the following format: GA_2001.01 where GA is the state, 2001 is the year it was erected, and the last number is the order in which it was erected in 2001. If the reality of the plaque does not match our number, all you have to do is let us know and we'll set it right.

We can enter National Register properties county by county, but everything else, museums, monuments, etc. will need to be added individually. There is also a State Register, but the overlap is significant, and there is currently no listing online.
