What information about historical markers and landmarks to expect for Northern Ireland, British Isles

There is no official system of plaques, as far as we can tell, which is typical for the British Isles.

The government agency which looks after historic buildings and monuments is the Environment and Heritage service. Several of its databases are online, though since there are literally tens of thousands of properties we are not planning to include them all. We work on the principle that if you find something, you can put in an individual landmark request for it; many of these sites are archaelogically sensitive or on private property, so only those of you who are there will be able to figure out which are which.

  • State Care Monuments: monuments which are directly maintained and run by the Service; these are usually impressively well preserved. Use the database lined from the NI_NR list, and set the Statutory Protection to "State Care".

  • Grade A Listed Buildings: Use the database which is linked from the NI_ALB list above, and make sure you set the Grade Listing to "A".

  • Scheduled Ancient Monuments: Use the database which is linked from the NI_SAM list above, and set "Statutory Protection" to "Scheduled". You may not request or include any sites which are on private property or which are restricted in any way.

You may count listed buildings of other grades which have a plaque that talks about the building itself. Plaques which talk about a resident are typically wildcards. These will need to be requested individually, as will other types of landmarks.
