What information about historical markers and landmarks to expect for Scotland, British Isles

There is no single system of historical markers or plaques in Scotland, though individual councils seem to put up their own in conjunction with other organisations.

Historic Scotland is the governmental branch which looks after historic structures and artefacts in Scotland. It has nearly 300 properties which it looks after directly, and a great many more which are listed buildings or scheduled ancient monuments of varying types.

We have created a list for Grade A listed buildings, and another for scheduled ancient monuments which are not directly "run" by Historic Scotland. You may also count other listed buildings if they have a plaque that pertains to the building itself and gives some information, however brief, about what it used to be.

For scheduled ancient monuments, our only requirement is that there is a) something that is 100% recognisable, and b) it is not on private land. Note that many of the really spectacular ones are already included in the Historic Scotland properties list. Do not trespass, and be safe.

We have entered all the Historic Scotland properties, and aim to eventually enter all the Grade A listed buildings and National Trust for Scotland properties. For everything else, you will need to request the properties one at a time.

At least one city (Inverness) has its own system of plaques. As you come across plaques, please continue to request them and let us know if you can see a pattern which might warrant its own, separate, list.
