What information about historical markers and landmarks to expect for Texas, USA

Unsurprisingly, Texas has the largest historical marker system in the United States, with over 13,000 markers of various kinds in its databases. It is also fantasically well-maintained and well-documented.

We started off by entering them all in the same list, but later realized that there were distinctions, and split them into different groupings. It is possible that you will find a misclassified marker; please let us know and we will fix it.

You can find data in a comprehensive searchable database maintained by the Texas Historical Commission. Using advanced search you can choose to see only data about historical markers or National Register. You can even download the data for your own county to do your research. We can enter your county for you; just request it, but it will go in without locations; we feel the best source of information is the THC site.

The distinctions we make are as follows:

  1. Historical Markers: these are large informative signs, usually on poles, which give information about a site or person. There are two sizes. A third size is a small plaque which is attached to a person's grave site.

  2. Recorded Texas Historical Landmarks: these are actual buildings and have a medallion and informational plate.

  3. Centennial Markers: these are generally large granite slabs with text engraved into them.

  4. Texas Historic Cemeteries: A separate designations for cemeteries of particular historic significance.

All of the above, and National Register properties, can be entered one county at a time for you. All others will need to be requested individually, though we have come across a few city-wide landmark systems and if you find information about one, let us know and we will add that, too.
